Converting bmp images to GB compatable sprites and backgrounds.

Are there any tools in particular that can convert a 32 x 32 bmp image into a GB compatible sprite? Similarly the same for backgrounds?

Re: Converting bmp images to GB compatable sprites and backgrounds.

The best tools I found are GBMB (gameboy map builder) and GBTD (gameboy tile designer)...
But they don't import images very well.

You have to create an image with four colours, and they have to be very specific, for example in GIMP you have to set the colours manualy to ffffff (white); c0c0c0 (light grey); 808080 (dark grey); 000000 (black). Then if your image has only that 4 colours, you can just copy and paste it in gameboy tile designer using split paste.

Gameman039a is a program that will optimize maps created with GBMB and GBTD.

GBA graphics 1.09 is another program that can import any image and optimize it as a map and tiles, then you'll have to convert the tiles to 4 colours.

The easiest way i found to convert an image is "GBTK" it just takes a 160x144 image and converts it to an array for gameboy (no color), this image uses 360 tiles and you have to use it with special functions.

I just found this and it could be useful (I've never used it myself though): http://www.chrisantonellis.com/gameboy/gbtdg/

There are also some converters listed here under "GFX Tools": http://gbdev.icequake.net/ (I'm not sure how many of the links work)

So from what I have, there's the GB Art Utility. I haven't used it but it seems to be able to do what you want. Since I couldn't find the source anymore, i've re-uploaded it :

I also have the GameBoy Image Converter which support bmp files and convert them to z80 assembly. Again I couldn't find the original source so here it is :

Usually though, I find it faster to work directly under GBTD but it can be tedious if you have already made graphics.
