The Worm King — finished Game Boy game built with GB Studio 1.0

Hi everyone,

I’m Jorge from Oniric Factor.

We’ve just released The Worm King, an original Game Boy noir horror and investigation game that may be interesting to people here because of when and how it was built.

Development originally started around five years ago using GB Studio 1.0.

Anyone who used GB Studio back then will probably remember how different it was from the current engine. The toolset was much smaller, so quite a lot of the design had to be built around those limitations.

We tried to get as much as we reasonably could out of that early version.

The final game combines:

Top-down exploration
First-person encounters
Item management
Health and sanity systems
Several different locations to investigate

The project was eventually put on hold while we considered a Kickstarter campaign. That never moved forward, but we still liked the game and felt it deserved to be released, so this year we returned to the project and finally finished it.

The released version still reflects that original GB Studio 1.0-era design rather than what could obviously be done with the engine today.

It is designed to run on original Game Boy hardware and the game is entirely in English.

Since this is a development-focused forum, if anyone is curious about how we approached something with that early version of GB Studio, I’d be happy to talk about it.

Thanks for taking a look.
