Gamelink to USB

I want to connect a GB printer to my PC via USB.  Since the printer operates via serial communication, I immediately thought that a simple FTDI (USB to Serial) cable would do me well.  However, since the GB Printer is a slave to the GB (e.g. it requires a clock signal), it seems I need to incorporate another means, e.g. not use a FTDI cable, perhaps I should just use SPI?  I suppose I could also drop a microcontroller in the middle and USB to that and have the microcontroller do the SCK, SIO, SDO that the printer needs.  Any suggestions would be welcome.
