Changing individual window layer tiles

I've run across a little hiccup in my game I'm working on. To conserve sprites (since there are a few metasprites and small bullet sprites flying around,) I'm trying to run my HUD on the window layer. I got a placeholder HUD made where the character's health is represented by three icons for each health beyond 1 (which is represented by 0 icons.)

I'm also planning to track the player's progress and score on a given level.

I'm trying to make the HUD function for health work off a switch with each case being the possible values for health (0-4 currently) which will change the window layer tiles with the tiles for an empty health unit and a filled health unit.

The only command I know for changing window layer tiles is set_win_tiles which, if it works how I think it does, would require me to update the entire HUD based on an existing map. I don't think it will let me update a single tile.

Or would I be better off using sprites over the window layer for those details?

Here's a function from my game which I use to place single tile:

The "tiles" variable is just a list of numbers from 0 to 255:

I hope this is helpful in your case.
The reason we do it with the array is this: The function expects a pointer to a tile index (or possibly an array of them). The addition "tiles + tile" creates an address pointing to the number in the array you want.
